Except a 20lb propane tank can only be filled to 80%. The other 20% is for thermal expansion. It's illegal to fill it with a full 20lbs.

The reason the cilynder doesn't fit properly is because Stihl came up with gen 2 cilynder called slant fit wich is supposed to give a couple more HP and less cooling fins in aprox. 2016-17 . The gen 2 is almost available only from Sthil and was in there saws at the time of change giving a bit of weight lost and lower profile cost lots more $$ I have the gen 1 bought in 2014 with the straight cilynder. Very nice video!!

Local place down here in Del Rio Texas fills them for 10 bucks flat and when they fill them they are the heaviest tanks I've ever lifted, and they do your tenth fill up free. Love it!

Costco is the cheapest place I found in Ontario to fill up propane tanks. Probably half the price of the exchange!

Where I live the local propane business is cheaper than the exchanges. The only time I'll do an exchange is when I want a newer tank or I waited to late to go to the local business 😁

My local wholesale club fills 20lbs for $14.99. I used blue rhino to exchange my over 10 year old tanks that couldn’t be refilled. Paying $20+ for 15lb even with getting newer tanks still felt like a ripoff.

Sorry Slim, that's NOT how it works, LOL. The internal filling regulators are DESIGNED not to allow an average above 15lbs for reasons of expansion. How clueless....

Loosen the cap on the gastank for about 30 seconds or so while the engine is running to let some air into the tank and stop the engine sputtering.

And don't leave it in your hot car after you pick it up lol

I went to my local Bjs recently they filled my tank up for 12.99 I almost fell over I’ve never seen a refill that good of price in my life this was around may 2024 for reference

Well, I’m glad you at least figured out something that a lot of us have known for a long time now. And you are spreading the word on this video to other people. Honestly, the only time I ever did an exchange is when my tank was broken and started to show its age. It was better to do a $25 exchange then to buy a new tank for $50.

Take that blue rino to your local hardware store- $14 for #20. Keep using the same tank until the certification expires, then exchange it back to blue rino for a new tank.

Here's how it was explained to me. DOT licensing on the exchange tanks only allows a 80% tank. When you refill at a station, they can go to 90%+. Still need a bit of head room for the liquid propane to go to gas. Always better to go to refill station, unless you need to dump your expired tank. Then do the exchange on the expired tank and refill that tank until that tank expires.

$19 to $26- I’m no mathematician, but that seems like significantly more than the “7% inflation” being touted.

It's my understanding that no propane tank is ever filled to 100% capacity, it needs room to expand inside, but that being said, it is best practice to go to a place that fills the tanks and only charges for the amount that is put in the tank, NOT a flat rate. I go to Tractor Supply and my local hardware store, they both only charge based on what is actually put in my tank. The only time I "exchange" a tank is when I need to replace an aging or damaged tank.

We have a local propane store and that's what the guy there told me. I believe they might even take more than 20 lbs. After 'he's' filled them they are 'heavy'!
